Technology: Gartner's 2009 Hype Cycle

By Dick Weisinger

Gartner is out with their list of most highly hyped technologies for 2009.  It is a familiar list with all entries identical to those of 2008 except that Computing Fabric (Grid computing) has been replaced with Cloud computing. Gartner defines hype as “excited speculation about all the benefits a new technology will offer”.

Here is Gartner’s list for 2009:

1.      Virtualization
2.      Cloud computing
3.      Servers (beyond blades)
4.      Web oriented architectures
5.      Enterprise mashups
6.      Specialized systems
7.      Social software / networking
8.      Unified communications
9.      Business intelligence
10.     Green IT.

The world has changed dramatically over the past 12 months, but Gartner hasn’t really changed their message.  A better observation of technology changes that are relevant for today’s IT shops should include mention of Open Source software and companies doing their best to implement easier-to-implement cost-saving strategies.
