Technology: Growth Forecast for IT Shifts Downward

By Dick Weisinger

Earlier in the year, Forrester had been predicting nearly 10 percent growth in IT revenues for 2010, but they have recently had to push that estimate down to 8.1 percent growth for the year.  Considering the state of the economy, that isn’t too bad, and it is ahead of many other sectors in the economy.  Weaker economic data and new figures from the Department of Commerce caused Forrester to make the revision.

Forrester cites the two main conditions for IT growth as macroeconomic health and technology innovation.  While there hasn’t been a shortage of innovation, the overall economy is still sputtering and can threaten any future growth. The most robust areas of growth are as follows:

  • Up 22.3 percent – PC Operating Systems
  • Up 19.0 percent – U.S. computer equipment sales
  • Up 10.8 percent – Application servers
  • Up    9.1 percent – Software sales
