Technology: The Feds Struggle to Get IT Right
Typically the words ‘Federal Government’, ‘IT’ and ‘efficiency’ are not used in the same sentence unless accompanied by a ‘no’ or a ‘not’.
The Feds have been struggling to right their wrongs and get it straight for years. Now, under pressure from the Obama administration to become more efficient and save money, the Federal Government is looking towards new technology to bail them out.
Top on their list are these five technologies:
- Cloud Computing
- Virtualization
- Service Oriented Architecture
- Open Source Software
- Geospatial Technologies
If one didn’t know better you’d think that you’re looking at one of Gartner’s lists. The Feds have aspirations to be on the cutting edge. More than half of the federal and IT professionals thought that these technologies hold the key to a more efficient future in government. But there are barriers to the realization of this goal that include budget hurdles, security issues, and employees with the right skills to use these technologies.
Assuming that the hurdles can be cleared, projections from the research group INPUT are that:
– The federal computing cloud market will grow from $370 million to $1.2 billion by 2014
– The federal virtualization market will grow from $800 million to $1.4 billion
– OSS in the federal market will from from $330 million to $660 million
– The federal geospatial technology market will grow from $860 million to $1.4 billion
