Technology: The Rise of the Mobile App — What Does it Mean for Business?

By Dick Weisinger

The growing popularity of mobile devices is signaling a shift away from the desktop computer as being the dominant platform for both business and personal computing.  And the market for the software that powers mobile devices is exploding.  Gartner estimates that the mobile app market will grow to be $58 billion by 2014.  That’s whopping growth when compared to just $5.2 billion being spent in 2010, and $15.1 billion in 2011.

Much of the growth is due to the the ease with which mobile app software can be found and purchased.  Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, Android, Microsoft and Samsung all have App stores from which mobile software can be downloaded, but the bulk of the downloads, in fact nine out of ten, can be attributed to downloads from Apple’s App Store.  Last year 8.2 billion mobile apps were purchased and downloaded.  In 2011, Gartner expects that number to more than double to 17.7 billion downloads.  And in 2014, they expect there to be 185 billion downloads.  That’s a lot of downloads, but in 2011 80 percent of downloads will be free software.  Gartner expects for-a-fee mobile apps to gradually increase in popularity.

Stephanie Baghdassarian, research director at Gartner said that “many are wondering if the app frenzy we have been witnessing is just a fashion, and, like many others, it shall pass. We do not think so.  Many are wondering if the app frenzy we have been witnessing is We strongly believe there is a sizable opportunity for application stores in the future. However, applications will have to grow up and deliver a superior experience to the one that a Web-based app will be able to deliver. Native apps will survive the Web enhancements only when they will provide a more-personal and richer experience to the ‘vanilla’ experience that a Web-based app will deliver.just a fashion, and, like many others, it shall pass. We do not think so.”

If Mobile Apps take a cue from what has happened with social media technology that originated in the consumer marketplace, we might expect to start seeing a lot more mobile apps targeting business software categories.
