Technology: What's the Next Hot Technology?
BlueWolf, a self-described agile business consulting firm, recently released a report that provides a snapshot of which technologies are currently hot, which are cold, and what’s likely to be the direction of technology over the next year. Visually the report is very appealing and stands in stark contrast to most traditional analyst reports. The report uses bold colors, pleasing fonts and interesting graphics, and follows a recent trend in this age of big data and analytics for how statistics can be presented in a visually hip and appealing way.
BlueWolf identifies in the report the top five technology trends:
- Mobile
- User Engagement
- Consumerization of IT
- Big Data
- Cloud Computing
Technologies are graded by five temperature levels: On Fire, Hot, Growing, Thawing, and Cold.
Based on this ranking, HTML5 is exploding and on fire. There seems to be huge interest in HTML5 right now. Interest is also high for technology languages like PHP and Ruby on Rails, but has been constant or sluggish for traditional development languages like Java and .Net, and a little surprisingly, Python, a long-time favorite at Google, has gone cold.
Mobile development for Android and iPhone are also now on fire. Blackberry and Windows Mobile development has gone cold.
BlueWolf’s breakdown of technologies by industry is interesting. For example, in Financial Industry, Java is the most common development skill sought after, representing one in five of all placements. In the Media, Java drops to 11 percent, and for Retail, Java comes in at just 6 percent.
