Vertical Intelligence: Expert-Guided Big-Data Analytics

By Dick Weisinger

What do you get when you combine human expertise with the results from big-data analytics? Something called ‘Vertical Intelligence’.

Experts in a particular area or vertical understand it well and they know that there are specific data indicators, relationships, and scenarios that define their space. An expert’s understanding can drive and guide how data can be searched, analyzed, and quantified to derive the greatest insight from it. The combination of human insight and understanding with big data analytics creates ‘vertical intelligence’.

“Vertical Intelligence helps in finding solutions to complex business problems in a more human-like fashion. This resembles adopting characteristics from human intelligence and implementing them as algorithms in a computer-friendly way. Work hours can be reduced significantly and human brains can be utilized in more creative aspects of the business such as brainstorming, innovating, and researching,” as explained by an article on Analytics Insight.

Tristan Greene, author and futurist, wrote on TheNextWeb that “Vertical intelligence may be a catchy buzzword, but the simple fact of the matter is that combining domain-specific human expertise with AI-powered big data analytics isn’t really optional in the machine learning era.
