We’re already into the year, so without further ado, here are a set of seven predictions for Big Data and analytics markets in 2016:

Cloud computing will rule.  The cloud is gaining strength as a strong component of any computing strategy.  The economics of the cloud will drive more companies to use the cloud or hybrid cloud/on-premise computing to perform cost effective and scalable big data analytics.

The cost of doing Big Data will drop.  Computing costs are dropping dramatically every year.  In 2016 software and computing prices will drop sufficiently so that even small businesses will be able to take advantage of the use of sophisticated data analytics.

Self-service data analytics will grow rapidly.  Big data tools will be designed to make self-service data exploration easier, allowing managers and executives to use data analytics with little or no support from IT staff.

Improved Security – Security issues have been a blocker for some big data and analytics applications.  Expect analytics software to better address privacy issues and shrink any objections to using the technology.

Visual and Storytelling interpretation – Increasingly businesses will use data to visually explain their data.  Infographics and charts will dominate the way data is presented.  Analysts will be expected to not just present reams of data but will need to become storytellers and be able to weave their results into a data narrative.

Growth in the Internet of Things (IoT) will help push the envelope for analytics.  Big data applications are touching all industries.  While many businesses are already using analytics for analyzing marketing and customer data, applications like IoT will increase the scope of Big Data to include applications like healthcare, manufacturing and utilities.

Predictive Analytics – Big data analytics will grow in sophistication and begin to be used to identify and predict trends and behavior patterns.
