Cloud Computing Security: Enterprise IT Needs to Proactively Provide Secure Cloud Options
While File Sharing apps make the sharing of data easy, the use of third-party file sharing apps can put sensitive data at risk. 18 percent of documents being uploaded to file sharing apps contain sensitive information, according to a report by Skyhigh Networks. The problem is that many cloud providers that manage that data don’t take the appropriate security steps to securely protect that data.
Users of file sharing systems often create and share links to the data that enable anyone with the link to have access to the document. Restricted access by personal email address is often frequently done but is only a weak form of protection. Weak security is putting enterprise data at risk.
Nigel Hawthorn, Skyhigh Networks’ chief European spokesperson, said that “with companies now accessing an average of 1,427 cloud services and generating more than 2.7 billion cloud transactions per month, cloud security cannot be ignored. It’s concerning that so many cloud service providers do not specify who owns data after upload and so few commit to not sharing it with third parties, as both could potentially see data falling into the wrong hands. IT should not be a department that simply says ‘no’, but instead one that knows how to proactively push employees towards safe and trusted cloud services”.
