Open Source: Speeding Development and Driving Business Innovation

By Dick Weisinger

Open source provides the benefits of enabling developers  to work more quickly and for businesses to accelerate the time it takes them to go to market.  The quality of open source software, the features, and the technical capabilities often make it not only competitive but often the preferred solution in a specific market category.

Black Duck Software recently announced the results of their 10th annual Open Source survey.  Some of the findings of this year’s report include:

  • 65 percent of businesses say that using open source helps them to speed their development work
  • 55 percent say that they use open source in their production environments
  • Financing of open source projects has increased by a factor of four over the last five years

Paul Santinelli, general partner at North Bridge, said that “Open source today is unequivocally the engine of innovation, whether that’s powering technology like operating systems, cloud, big data or IoT, or powering a new generation of open source companies delivering compelling solutions to the market.”
