Oracle: ECM Consolidation continues with Stellent Purchase

By Dick Weisinger

One week after a highly-attended and successful OpenWorld conference and one week prior to AIIM’s ECM West Conference, Oracle announced yesterday their purchase of Stellent.

The announcement comes as a surprise, at least to us.  Oracle has been heavily promoting the use of their Oracle Content DB as middleware for ECM vendors to adopt as a foundation layer for applications.  In June Open Text announced support for Content DB.  I later had heard rumors that Stellent also had plans to adopt Oracle’s Content DB, but there has been little public indication from Stellent that this would happen.

The Stellent purchase comes just one day after an updated partnership announcement between Open Text and Oracle that allows both companies to more easily distribute each others products.  It’s hard to know how the Stellent announcement would affect the Open Text relationship.  Most likely Oracle has been pursuing both companies and Stellent came through.  But having announced support for Oracle’s Content DB, the Stellent buyout may now put Open Text in an awkward position.  Maybe Open Text is still a acquisition candidate for Oracle?

SAP, HP, and Microsoft are all also possibly looking for acquisitions in the ECM space too, but the field has narrowed now to a group consisting mostly of smaller, but highly specialized, niche players over the last few months.
