Technology is 'Amplifying' the Enterprise, but Diminishing IT
What’s on the top of the minds of CIO’s going into 2012? One thing is the budget. Outside of bright spots in South America and a few areas in Asia, the continued poor economy is causing many global IT budgets to remain relatively flat for the foreseeable future.
Gartner polled CIO’s and found that the top tech priorities for CIO’s in 2012 are the following:
- Analytics and business intelligence. (Up from 5 last year)
- Mobile technologies. (Up one notch from 3 last year)
- Cloud computing — SaaS, IaaS, PaaS (Down from number one last year)
- Collaboration/workflow technologies. (Last year ranked at 8)
- Legacy modernization.
- IT management. (Down from 4 last year)
- CRM
- ERP applications
- Security
- Virtualization. (Down from 2 last year)
It’s interesting that BI has bounced back from fifth place last year, after dropping from it’s 2010 number one ranking. The surge in interest with Big Data and analytics in 2011 is spilling over into 2012. Dave Aron, vice president and a fellow in Gartner’s CIO Research group, said that “in the past, everyone promised that BI would save the world, and it didn’t. Now there is more mature BI and much more data. There is a big opportunity in analytics and BI to help a company pick up weak signals about market quicker, to specialize more on what is generating value.”
But how much does the CIO’s strategy still really matter? Mark McDonald, group vice president for Gartner Executive Programs and Gartner Fellow, said that “Technology’s role in the enterprise is increasing, but this does not mean, that the role of the IT organization is increasing… CIOs concentrating on IT as a force of operational automation, integration and control are losing ground to executives who see technology as a business amplifier and source of innovation. Effective leaders use technology, which includes IT, to strengthen the customer experience and eliminate costly internal distortions. They are using technology to ‘amplify’ the enterprise.”
