SOA: Service Oriented Storage

Services Oriented Architecture and storage technologies are converging into something that people are beginning to dub Services Oriented Storage (SOS), one component of a Service Oriented Infrastructure.

A proliferation of proprietary technology storage solutions in the marketplace is confusing customers. These technologies include nearline storage, thin provisioning and disk to disk backups. SOS will do away with a lot of the confusion, creating a common platform that will allow any type of storage device to plug into it. It is another step in the evolution towards highly flexible and dynamic data centers.

Much like products like VMware are doing for the virtualization of Operating Systems, SOS will enable multiple pathways towards leveraging services like tiered storage and thin provisioning.

“Today you see a bunch of niche products – virtual tape libraries (VTLs), NAS, archiving and so on, all with their own islands of storage, and each with the same basic functions to perform,” said Hu Yoshida of Hitachi Data Systems.

“We believe that virtualisation is the way to provide those storage services, such as mirroring and replication. Virtualisation means the application doesn’t have to be interrupted for big data movement.”

Part of what is behind the trend towards SOS is the rapidly growing amount of unstructured data. Unstructured data for many organizations is growing at a rate ten times faster than the growth of structured data. And right now very little is done by organizations to extract knowledge from unstructured data. Estimates are that only about four percent goes though any sort of content filtering or classification.
