Open Source: Investments Flow Into Open Source
Yesterday was a big day for Open Source investment funding. GreenPlum, Alfresco, and Zenoss all received investment dollars.
Greenplum received $27 million from Meritech Capital partners, Sun Microsystems, SAP Ventures and others. Greenplum is an Open Source Postgresql-based database that targets Business Intelligence. Sun’s Jonathan Schwartz, just days after Sun’s announced intent to purchase MySQL, said that this move continues to shows Sun’s commitment towards Open Source and the database community. Greenplum’s Open Source product, Bizgres, has received development assistance from JasperSoft, Kinetic Networks, and Loyalty Matrix. Founded in 2003, Greenplum has now taken in $61 million of funding.
Alfresco, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management company, yesterday received an additional $9 million from SAP Ventures, the Mayfield Fund and Accel Partners. Alfresco plans to use the cash infusion to expand product development and to accelerate their global explansion in German, US and Asian markets.
Zenoss also received $11 million in funding yesterday from Intel Capital. Zenoss’ provides open-source infrastructure monitoring software.
It’s interesting that SAP Ventures was involved in both the Greenplum and Alfresco funding. SAP Ventures has already funded Open Source companies like Black Duck, JasperSoft, Intalio, Groundwork, MySQL, Ping Identity, SocialText, Zend, Red Hat, and Sistina. On one hand, SAP dismisses the capabilities of Open Source, yet these investments make clear that they take Open Source seriously.
