Internet of Things (IoT): Which IT Businesses Will Benefit?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to usher in big opportunities for IT businesses.
Gartner estimates that the number of devices connected to the internet will increase dramatically by 2020 to reach 30 billion devices. The IT hardware, services and software associated with IoT technology is expected to reach nearly $2 trillion to that time.
What kind of businesses will be able to profit from the emerging field of IoT? Industry Association CompTIA asked that question to IT solution providers.
Seth Robinson, director at CompTIA, said that “we’re likely to see the emergence of many new firms focused on specific aspects of these systems, such as devices and data analysis. The true value of IoT will come from the combination and connectivity of all pieces… The true value of IoT lies not just in the data being generated and captured, but through the services that protect the data, perform the analysis and present findings in a usable way.”
The CompTIA survey of IT professionals asked which types of companies and activities will be able to profit from IoT had the following results:
- 45 percent – Device Companies
- 43 percent – Data analytics/big data companies
- 35 percent – companies specializing in service API development
- 30 percent – IT solution providers
- 26 percent – Telecom carriers and cable companies
- 25 percent – Networking equipment/software companies
- 23 percent – Sensor/chip companies
- 15 percent – Platform and ecosystem providers
