The concept of data archiving has most frequently been applied to email. But archiving applications are now broadening their focus.
In fact, data archiving is becoming a key component of almost every information management initiative, and very frequently managers and executives outside of the IT world are becoming involved too, especially at the largest companies.
A recent IDC study called “Active Archiving: Retention, Preservation, and Reuse” investigated archiving solutions, who is using archiving, and how the systems are being employed. Organizations looking for a solution need to carefully consider their planned use cases and security.
There was nothing very revolutionary in the findings of the report, but it does provide confirmation around what many are saying.
Some of the key findings include:
– Compliance, eDiscovery, and record retention requirements are key drivers to the continued interest in archiving
– Archiving is frequently sold at the executive level as tool to enable innovation, improve customer service, and business intelligence
– The emphasis on archiving is increasingly on unstructured rather than structured data
