Internet of Things: Driving the Convergence of IT and OT
Increasingly the two areas of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) are converging. IT refers to the physical devices like computers, storage and networking for managing data. OT refers to the monitoring of events, processes and devices in manufacturing and industrial environments. Technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), or more specifically Industrial IoT (IIoT) are bringing these worlds together.
Keith Nosbusch, Rockwell’s chairman and CEO, said that “central to achieving the Connected Enterprise is the convergence of IT and OT. Historically, these have been two different worlds with different priorities, and base technologies. True convergence between these two worlds has been a challenge.”
Brian Carpizo, manufacturing and supply chain team lead at Uptake, told Forbes magazine that “we are analyzing converged IT/OT data sets to identify previously hidden correlative factors in the entire product lifecycle. We are tearing down the silos between design engineering, manufacturing engineering, manufacturing operations, and after-market support. We treat it as one process to be tuned and optimized. Instead of just look-behind tools, we predict how changes in inputs and processes can affect output.”
Chris Eriksen, general manager for IT at CitiPower and Powercor, described the effect of convergence in the power industry, saying that “IT/OT [operational technology] convergence and the internet of things are creating more opportunities to leverage advanced analytics. As an example, this convergence can provide greater insight into network performance for advanced monitoring purposes which enables improved electricity supply quality and resilience for our customers.”
