Artificial Intelligence: Mimicking the Brain: The Rise of Neuromorphic Computers
Recently Microsoft announced an internal reorganization of their business to put a greater focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). It’s not just Microsoft that’s interested in AI. Google, Baidu, Amazon, and Facebook are all investing significantly in AI technology.
Graphics Processing Unit (GPUs) have helped advance and speed-up implementations of AI and deep learning algorithms. But there are new chips under design and in the pipeline that will specialize in processing AI algorithms.
One approach in designing AI hardware is called neuromorphic computing. This technology tries to mimic the way the synapses in the human brain work. The idea is to create very large numbers of electric circuits on a chip that mimic the neuro-biological interactions in the human nervous system.
A report by Grand View Research suggests that by 2024 the size of the neuromorphic computing market will reach $6.5 billion dollars.
Sunil Kukreja, Head of Neuromorphic Engineering & Robotics at the National University of Singapore, said that “we try to mimic the human brain to understand how it is processing things, such as touch and vision to design artificial neural systems.”
