Cloud Computing: Still a Long Ways to Go to Before Cloud Used Heavily in Critical Production Environments
Most businesses now use the cloud, or at least won’t admit to anything otherwise. A recent survey by CompTIA found that 90 percent of businesses say that they’re using the cloud. Another survey by RightScale found that of the businesses surveyed averaged using 6 different private and public clouds for production and experiment.
But the CompTIA report dug deeper into the usage numbers and found that while large numbers of businesses are using the cloud, the cloud still accounts for really only a small fraction of total critical computing. Most usages to date have adopted the cloud for non-critical applications.
Seth Robinson, senior director, technology analysis, CompTIA, said that “the reality is that the cloud market is undergoing refinement as users gain greater appreciation and understanding of what cloud computing entails. This is a good reminder that a significant number of businesses are still learning about cloud concepts and performing experiments, pilots and initial migrations. Cloud is a robust part of the larger IT landscape and a greater part of total IT spend will shift to cloud technology. Cloud offerings will also expand budgets as they expand the limits of what a business is able to accomplish.”
