Artificial Intelligence: Tech Giants Team Up to Try to Ease People’s Anxiety Over AI

By Dick Weisinger

Tech leaders from Microsoft, Amazon.com, Facebook, IBM and alphabet’s DeepMind and Google divisions teamed up recently to create a group called the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society.  The group will be co-chaired by Microsoft Research chief Eric Horvitz and DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman.

In a joint announcement, the group said that “through rigorous research, the development of best practices, and an open and transparent dialogue, the founding members of the Partnership on AI hope to maximize this potential and ensure it benefits as many people as possible… We believe that artificial intelligence technologies hold great promise for raising the quality of people’s lives and can be leveraged to help humanity address important global challenges such as climate change, food, inequality, health, and education.”

Horvitz said that some recent tech stories in the news about AI have created an “echo chamber of anxiety.” He said that “questions come up about the transparency of our systems and the ability for us to explain ourselves. The best way forward is with an inclusiveness and open dialogue.”

Suleyman said  that “the reason we all work on AI is because we passionately believe its ability to transform our world. The positive impact of AI will depend not only on the quality of our algorithms, but the on the amount of public discussion … to ensure AI is understood by and benefits as many people as possible.”
