Artificial Intelligence: The Booms and Busts of AI Hype

By Dick Weisinger

“The Honeymoon is Over!” declared Forrester in a recent report.  Not that they are finding fault with the long-term potential of  AI technology, but that Forrester thinks the technology has expectations set so high that it is certain to disappoint many.

Their survey found that more firms are increasingly investing in AI but well more than half of them with investments haven’t got anything yet to show for their investment.

Thomas Hornigold, freelance write, wrote that “no one would dispute the fact that we’re in an age of considerable AI hype, but the progress of AI is littered by booms and busts in hype, growth spurts that alternate with AI winters.”

What’s next? The Forrester report predicts that one area that will make AI more accessible will be better human to machine user interfaces and that 2018 will be a year where vendors will focus to improve UIs.  In particular, the user of conversational User Interfaces will improve along with the investment in improving Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Natural Language Generation (NLG).
