Internet 2018: Snapshot of Internet Trends and Statistics
Mary Meeker, a venture capitalist and partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, released her annual report on Internet statistics and trends on May 30th. It covers mobile and commerce, as well as key tech players, like Amazon, Alibaba, and Google.
Some of the trends included in the report include:
- Smartphone saturation. 2017 was the first year that shipment numbers did not grow
- Internet growth slowing. 2017 growth down to 7 percent from 12 percent in 2016
- Internet consumption times continue to increase. US adults average 5.9 hours per day on digital media
- Voice controlled products are growing. Amazon had 30 million Echo’s installed at the end of 2017
- Tech market capitalization. Tech companies in the US account for 25 percent of total capitalization
- Tech disruption times are increasing. It took 80 years for Americans to adopt dishwashers. The Internet was universally accepted in ten years.
- Immigration is important to US tech business. More than half of the top tech businesses were founded by first or second generation immigrants.
