Alfresco: Embedded in Traditional Software Application
In June, Adobe significantly enhanced their LifeCycle Enterprise Suite (ES) application by adding new content service capabilities. The announcement shows the importance of content management services and how products can be expected to increasingly embed content services in the future.
What’s even more interesting about the announcement is that Adobe will be embedding Open Source Alfresco software into their product to enable content services. Criteria that Adobe used to select Alfresco as embeddable middleware include its flexibility, compliance with Web 2.0 standards, enterprise-ready quality, and the fact that Alfresco is Open Source.
“Alfresco’s open source business model and ability to support Adobe Flex and Web 2.0 technologies will allow our customers to take full advantage of advanced capabilities to deliver content-rich engagement applications even faster,” said Rob Tarkoff, senior vice president of Business Productivity Business Unit at Adobe. “By bringing together our technologies, now our customers can quickly create a business process or application with the LiveCycle technology platform that is deeply integrated with enterprise content.”
Alfresco CEO John Powell commented on the importance of the announcement because the Adobe partnership will give Alfresco “credibility with companies that might otherwise not even sniff at an open source vendor. Adobe went through a lengthy evaluation and having picked Alfresco, it means we offer a quality enterprise-grade content management system. Working with Adobe gives us a wider access to people who wouldn’t normally have access to open source applications.”
