ECM: Governance Lacking around Unstructured Data
Unstructured data refers to data that does not fit neatly into a structured schema of a database. It typically refers to files or documents that include things like e-mail files, word-processing text documents, PowerPoint presentations, JPEG and GIF image files, and MPEG video files.
In a survey of 870 IT professionals by the Ponemon Institute in New York, 89 percent felt that it was difficult to control access well to unstructured data. 70 percent said that access to unstructured data in their organization by individuals was sometimes unwarranted. 84 percent said that some of their unstructured data could be accessed by individuals with no business need.
- 91 percent of organizations say they have no process about determining ownership of unstructured data
- 76 percent said that they have no process to determine who should have access to unstructured data.
- 61 percent of organizations have no process to monitor which users are accessing unstructured data.
- 84 percent believe that the control of unstructured data will become increasingly important.
- 77 percent said their organization had no process around organizing, managing, and automating processes around structured data.
It’s somewhat astounding in 2008 to see numbers this high around lack of basic content and document management capabilities.
