AR/VR + Digital Twins: Examining and Testing Virtual Designs Before Construction
A digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical product or system that is frequently updated so that it represents as closely as possible the physical object being modeled. The virtual model represented by the digital twin allows users to gain an in-depth understanding of the existing object and also see how the twin would respond to external forces and stimuli.
In order to visually enhance the usability of the digital twin, often Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) headsets are used to enable an immersive experience for interacting with the model. Applications of AR/VR + Digital Twins include product development, remote assistance, and training.
Gartner said in an anayst report that “companies can initially use digital twins to save money simply by improving situational awareness. For example, digital twins can help companies to recognize equipment failures before they stall production, allowing repairs to be made early or at less cost. Companies can then save even more money when they further automate their business response to such changing conditions.”
Sandrine Lasserre in an article for TechViz wrote that “one of the problems with creating physical prototypes, is that you can’t detect the errors before the prototype is created. That means more resources are spent for product models that might still present errors or risk for the users. Besides, when it comes to large-scale models, it’s near-impossible to get the true scale of the product and find the errors on the model. Virtual reality enables you to interact with the 3D model at 1:1 scale, avoiding you costly rework and identify the risks and conception error, even in the case of bespoke adaptations.”
Gartner estimates that half of large industrial companies are already using digital twins. Global Market Insights estimates that the market will grow at an annual rate of 30 percent over the next five years.
