Artificial Intelligence: AI Being Used as Early Detection System for Wildfires

By Dick Weisinger

The California and Western USA wildfire situation has been brutal over the last few years as devastating heat and drought have led to massive wildfires that have burned tens of thousands of acres, cost billions of dollars in losses, and caused tens of fatalities.

Cal Fire said that “while wildfires are a natural part of California’s landscape, the fire season in California and across the West is starting earlier and ending later each year.”

Many point to the fires as a sign of climate change caused by global warming. Whatever the cause, it is increasingly being called the “new normal” for much of the Western United States.

What to do? California’s Sonoma County is experimenting with the use of an AI-based detection system. The system uses a network of hundreds of cameras that capture images which are then processed by AI to determine whether or not there is any indication of a fire in the image. The algorithm has identified fires with better than 97 percent success.

Neil Sahota, AI expert and futurist, said that “we know that there’s a combination of factors that can lead to a wildfire and rather just be reactive, we could potentially predict them by thinking about the dryness of the air, the air temperature, even the threat of thunderstorms. Using things like drone technology combined with AI we could actually survey a lot of these areas, and using the climate information that we have, check on the risk factors of various spots of where wildfires could actually occur. We know that this is possible. The real challenge is that it’s a lot of work. If we can even cut down the number of wildfires by 20 percent, that’s a huge value back. We have the tools, we have the technology, we have a good chunk of the data. We just need to have the will to actually do it.”
