Big Data and Storage: Will Storage Costs Constrain Big Data Growth?
Big Data is putting strains on businesses trying to find the storage space to house all the new data that’s being collected.
A survey by Tarmin today found that 66 percent of businesses say that they’re under pressure to store increasingly huge amounts of data but they don’t have the budget to keep adding storage to hold that data.
The Aberdeen Group estimates that storage requirements are increasing by 35 percent annually, which is forcing businesses to double their storage capacity every 24 to 30 months. Aberdeen analyst Dick Csaplar, as reported by ComputerWorld, said that “today, an average of 13% of the money in IT budgets is being spent on storage. Two and a half years from now, it will be 26%, and then 52%. Pretty soon, this ratchets out of control, so you can’t keep doing the same things over and over.”
Joseph Lynn, VP of marketing for Tarmin, said that “when you think of that rate of growth, people are literally turning up with bandload and bandload of disks at this data center where you can’t fill it fast enough to keep up with performance, and the amount of money people are talking about is hundreds of millions just on storage… There’s too much data on the ground level, and at the end of the day that’s the technical challenge. We want to be using this data as a competitive asset for our organization, and that’s really the next step that this data evolution is growing towards. The Big Data movement is all about that.”
But are these businesses wrong? Some argue that improvements in data compression and ever-decreasing costs in storage will enable businesses to keep pace with the increasing data flow. Only time will tell.
