Big Data in the Cloud: Vendors Enable Easier Access to Big Data Tools
Cloud computing vendors are increasingly using Big Data to run their businesses and create offerings that enable customers to apply Big Data techniques. A Technology Business Review Inc. (TBR) report found that cloud vendors are using Big Data capabilities to help them secure new customers and to expand their product offerings. The report suggests that the addition of Big Data features has contributed to the growth of these companies. The top 50 public cloud providers increased by 47 percent to $6.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013.
On the one hand cloud vendors are able to collect information about how customers are using their cloud services. These vendors are able to collect statistics about the number of users, usage patterns, data set access, and which features are most commonly used. That kind of data can help these vendors tune their services to best address usage patterns and create products that meet user needs.
Cloud vendors are also creating products based on Big Data tools. For example, some IaaS service providers like Amazon, Microsoft and Rackspace offer one-click deployments of Hadoop and NoSQL databases, making it easy to get started with those tools. And similarly, PaaS service providers like IBM and HP, are introducing Big Data analytics tools, like IBM’s Watson and Blumix tools and HP’s Vertica and Autonomy.
