Open Source: It’s about Security, Quality and Features, not just Cost
Open Source software gained early popularity because it was free. But today, Open Source is more often being used by businesses for other reasons. Reasons like security, quality, and features.
In a recent survey by Black Duck Software, 72 percent said that part of the reason why they use Open Source software is because they believe that it’s more secure than proprietary software. 80 percent say that Open Source software generally is of higher quality than proprietary software.
Matt Assay, VP of business development at MongoDB, said that “50% of enterprises now use and contribute to open-source projects, a massive jump from just a few years ago. As for why they’re participating, it’s not only to lower costs but primarily to drive innovation by tapping into a steady stream of high-quality software.”
Lou Shipley, President and CEO of Black Duck, said that “Open source has proven its quality and security, and reached a point of widespread democratization and proliferation. As such, organizations must … change the way they view their role. Understanding that it’s about more than just cost-cutting or any of the traditional reasons to simply use OSS; it’s about participating and managing the logistical challenges to gain competitive advantage, attract top talent, and influence project direction.”
Michael Skok, general partner at North Bridge Venture Partners, said that “Open source is consuming the software world as the inherent quality, functionality, and increasingly ease of deployment creates a powerful gravitational pull on people and industries… Many of the leading technology areas such as cloud, big data, content management and mobile are now treating open source as their ‘foundational platform.’ Further, more new areas like the Internet of Things, which requires interoperability and extensibility, can only be met by open source initiatives, hence the emergence of new communities.”
