Big Data: The Revolution of Sensor Data

Over the last 15 years the internet has managed to touch and change many aspects of our lives.  But the change is far from over.  The Internet is now becoming the delivery channel for huge streams of data being generated by sensors.  Sensors are being embedded into just about everything and located just about everywhere with the task of collecting and transmitting data via the internet.

There are many applications for the use of sensor data.  For example, ground data sensors combined with remote satellite sensing allow accurate assessment of crop conditions. Things like temperature, humidity, light levels, carbon dioxide levels, and 30 other parameters are measured.  Using the results, the way the field is farmed can be adjusted, improving plant quality, and reducing energy use.

There are an increasing number of applications in health care.  The elderly are being monitored with data sensors to check to see that they are taking their medications, preparing meals, and getting the proper amount of rest.  Some patients are now being outfitted with sensors that continuously monitor vital signs like blood pressure while they are outside the hospital or clinic.  Mobile health technology has potential to improve people’s lives and reduce health system costs.

Scientists are using sensors to monitor bacterial count in coastal waters to be able to determine the water-quality conditions of beaches.  Oil exploration companies are using sensor data collected to help discover and assess oil reservoirs. Items in Supply chains can now be tracked by location and environmental conditions using data sensors.
