Cloud Computing: Businesses Slow to Formalize Cloud Usage Policies
A recent report by the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) looked at how businesses are using cloud services.

The CSA report found that “while security remains the top barrier to cloud adoption, a lack of knowledge and experience on the part of IT and business managers is also a significant barrier.”
Rajiv Gupta, CEO of Skyhigh Networks, said that “the past few years have marked a paradigm shift in IT’s role, from provider to enabler… Companies are aware of the consumerization of IT but have room to more proactively address the security concerns of cloud adoption.”
The CSA report found that 38 percent of businesses block cloud services for their employees. The most frequently blocked services include cloud storage providers and social networking sites.
Large enterprises (with more than 5000+ employees) are more likely than mid-sized and smaller companies to have created a set of policies and procedures for cloud usage. This is includes having set up a cloud governance committee (35 percent versus 12 percent), and a cloud training program (26 percent versus 20 percent).
Jim Reavis, CEO of the Cloud Security Alliance, said that “as companies move data to the cloud, they are looking to put in place policies and processes so that employees can take advantage of cloud services that drive business growth without compromising the security, compliance, and governance of corporate data… Adoption is really growing and concerns are beginning to get pushed up to C-level executives. They [C-level managers] are getting engaged and getting their organizations to be more responsible when it comes to what is being used and how data is being protected.”
