Internet of Things: Cooperation Between Industry and Government
Blacket Review of teh Internet of Things
The British government recently published a detailed report about the impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) on government, something that they’re calling the ‘second digital revolution’. The report is called the Blackett Review, named after the Nobel Prize winner Baron Blackett, a physicist who is known for his operations research contributions during World War II.
The report looks at how the Internet of Things is expected to radically transform the technologies in government, energy, transport and healthcare sectors. While much of the data in the report are references to other studies, the Blackett Review does a good job of pulling together information about the current state of IoT. The report also identifies many areas, particularly from the perspective of governments, that the technology is expected to affect.
Some of the findings of the report include:
- Recommendation for government to back open, interoperable and secure standards.
- Establishment of a government advisory board that can advise and coordinate IoT efforts on-going between the private and public sectors.
- Continue and expand the publishing of real-time government Open Data
- Government and Industry need to work together to come up with best principles for security and privacy
- Government and Industry need to work together to maximize connectivity and continuity of IoT devices
- Data Science needs to be prioritized and encouraged in secondary and tertiary education
