Cloud Computing: Cloud Vendors Simplify and Accelerate Big Data Adoption

By Dick Weisinger

Hadoop was the break-out product that enabled many businesses to get involved with analyzing Big Data.  Unfortunately, using Hadoop is not an out-of-the-box experience where you’re ready to go after installing the software. Despite the complexity, many companies still continue to use Hadoop and report great success using it.  Cloud computing is making adoption of Hadoop easier.

While Hadoop can be hard to set up and get right, using an instance that’s pre-installed and running in the cloud simplifies the process.  Dave Mariani, AtScale CEO, told InformationWeek that “on-premises Hadoop is hard. It’s hard to manage for all but a few enterprises that have the skill set. There are a number of companies that are skipping on-premises entirely.”

The AtScale survey had the following insights about Big Data, Hadoop and the Cloud:

  • Big Data is increasingly performed in the cloud
  • Enterprise report issues with self-service Analytics
  • Mega-vendors Microsoft and Google are offering Big Data capabilities
