Cloud Computing: Pandemic Accelerating Digital Transformation

By Dick Weisinger

Millions of students and employees have been sent home to work. The connection between these at-home workers and their organizations is increasingly being facilitated by the cloud.

Andres Rodriguez, CTO and co-founder of Nasuni, said that “I don’t think any of us anticipated this situation, where the infrastructure is intact but physically inaccessible because everyone is isolating themselves at home. I think that what it has taught us is that the physical network is a serious liability. IT teams can’t access their own data centers, yet they still have to provide services to thousands of people around the world.”

The sudden change in working habits has created a spike in cloud usage. For example, Microsoft reports that their cloud usage increased by 775 percent compared to pre-COVID-19.

A report released by Flexera today shows that COVID-19 has accelerated business plans to adopt cloud services. Businesses of all sizes are significantly adjusting their usage estimates upwards for this year’s cloud services.

A report by GlobalData found that “as businesses shutter their brick and mortar operations and, where they can, transition to a remote workforce, it is clear how important the cloud is for continuity of operations. Any organization that actively resisted digitalization is now confronted with a harsh reality. This puts cloud providers in a strong position.”
