Cloud Computing Security: The Road to a Secure Cloud is Likely to be a Long One
Security threats are becoming increasingly common and sophisticated. A survey by Arbor Networks about Infrastructure Security found that:
- 30 percent of organizations report seeing Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) against their internal networks over the last year.
- All organizations reported seeing at least some level of application-layer attacks
- Organizations reported a dramatic rise in the number of DDoS attacks
- 10 percent of Data Centers surveyed saw more than 100 DDoS attacks per month
- 20 percent report having had a mobile outage over the past year as a result of a security incident
- Attacks against Web Services up 17 percent over the previous year
It’s no wonder that security is still ranked top or very high on the list of concerns of organizations when considering cloud computing.
58 percent of IT professionals rank security as their biggest concern when considering to adopt cloud services, and 60 percent say that the security procedures and policies provided is an important factor that is considered when selecting a cloud provider, according to the recently reported Data Health Check report prepared by Databarrack.
Similar concerns about security were reflected in a different survey of IT professionals taken by Avere Systems. That report found that 60 percent of organizations said that cloud security is one of their top concerns when considering cloud adoption. Other challenges/barriers related to cloud adoption mentioned were organizational resistance (53 percent) and performance issues (29 percent). The major benefits of moving to the cloud cited by 60 percent of professionals in the Avere survey were cost savings, and data recovery and business continuity.
Reports by 451 Research, CloudPassage and IDG Enterprise also all found that IT groups rank security as their major concern.
Peter Groucutt, managing director for Databarracks, said that “security is always going to be the major priority for those considering a move to cloud services, as you are often trusting a third party with your company’s most sensitive data. However… organizations are no longer seeing this as a roadblock, but rather an opportunity to review their current security practices and implement effective new policies that protect their data and enable a more confident move to cloud services.”
