Cloud Engineering: Building Scalable, Cost-Effective, Quality-UX Cloud Applications

By Dick Weisinger

Cloud Engineering is a multi-disciplinary approach to cloud computing that focuses on the standardization, commercialization, and governance of the cloud. Cloud engineers architect cloud solutions that are highly scalable, can cost-efficiently satisfy business requirements, and provide a quality user experience.

Joe Duffy, founder and chief executive officer of Pulumi Corp, said that “Cloud Engineering is the next quantum leap in how we build cloud software. Cloud engineering means bringing the cloud closer to application development and infusing its capabilities to create new cloud-enabled experiences. Cloud engineering also means bringing more engineering practices to infrastructure, enabling us to leverage infrastructure as not just code but software. And finally, cloud engineering enables us to unlock collaboration, enabling the entire team to move faster with confidence.”

Duffy said that “teams are modernizing their entire infrastructure platforms… That is where this cloud engineering piece comes in. It is really to focus on how we can abstract the lower infrastructure and scalability pieces and to allow developers [to create] applications that provide business value in a transparent and seamless way.”

Research from OpenPR estimates that the Cloud Engineering market is growing 23.2 percent annually and will reach $13.5 billion by 2022. Growth is being fueled by businesses moving their IT and business applications to the cloud. A report by AllCloud found that 85 percent of companies already have more than half of their IT workloads in the cloud.
