Cloud Robotics: On-Demand Remote Brain Power for Mobile Robots

By Dick Weisinger

Cloud robotics tethers remote cloud services with robotics. The cloud offers large-scale computation and storage capabilities that can be used for off-loading tasks from the robot. Cloud robotics is particularly useful for mobile robots because in that case there is often limited computing and power capabilities.

Cloud Robotics is growing at a rate of 32.4 percent annually and the market size is expected to reach $21.9 billion by 2024.

Abhishek Kathpal, researcher at the Maryland Robotics Center, wrote that “cloud robotics can lead to speeding up of many CPU-intensive tasks. Cloud computing has the potential to do the computationally-intensive tasks like SLAM, motion and path planning in cloud and sending the action commands to robot. The systems include in cloud robotics still require some computations to be performed by on-board chips because of network latency and poor quality of internet services in some places.”
