Cloud Security: Security Worries Still Stop Many Businesses from Leaping to the Cloud
The good news is that there are fewer concerns about cloud data security. A recent survey by North Bridge Venture Partners found that the number of IT professionals citing security as their top concern with the cloud dropped from 55 percent to 46 percent over the last year.
The bad news is that 46 percent is still high and security remains a blocker for many businesses when considering cloud options. A survey by Voltage Security found that cloud security ranks as a ‘big’ concern for more than 75 percent of the IT groups that they surveyed — although it may not be their ‘top’ concern.
A similar report by CA Technologies found that while cloud security has improved in the eyes of many IT shops, getting past the issue of security will be daunting. Confidence in cloud security still hovers around 50 percent according to CA.
As a result of security worries, many businesses are just waiting. The Voltage Security report further found that 56 percent of IT teams say that their big data and cloud projects have stalled because they are not adequately able to address security concerns.
Dave Anderson, senior marketing director at Voltage Security, said that “this is a huge roadblock for organisations that are ready to reap the benefits of big data. The majority of large and mid-size organisations are finding that an inability to protect sensitive data within a big data environment is a major concern, so while they may be starting projects, they are abandoning them. That’s not good for business.”
