Code Developers: Indispensable to Enterprises

By Dick Weisinger

Who built the giant companies in the software tech industry?
Steve Ballmer shouted it loud in an on-stage Windows 2000 release rant: Developers!

It isn’t only the giants now. All organizations need great developers. An important goal of many enterprises now is Digital Transformation — and developers are a key part of that effort. Digital transformation can only be successful when there is a strong team of IT DevOps and software developers. Developers can help design and build the software that enables transformation and enhances user experience. And it’s not just developers doing internal development.

IDC found that “64% of the global 2000 businesses already have a platform designed for external developer engagement. Over half of the world’s largest organizations are proactively trying to build out a community of developers, users, customers and partners that can collaborate on projects that offer a common interest, with an eye toward hopefully selling something to these contributors.”

Steve Ballmer summed it all up at a Dev conference

Arnal Dayaratna, research vice president, Software Development at IDC, said that “given their role in designing, building, and executing digital strategies, developers have become indispensable to the modern enterprise, developers are product designers, product managers, business analysts, builders, strategists, and sales professionals all rolled into one. This expansion of the responsibilities of developers means that developers are critical to the success and growth of enterprises and organizations as measured by their ability to innovate, execute on strategic and operational plans, and pivot business operations in response to a rapidly changing business landscape.”
