By Dick Weisinger

Half of Internet users have run afoul with some kind of security issue over the last year.

eMarketer, a Marketing Research company, recently pulled together some interesting statistics about how vulnerable we all are when using the Internet to conduct business.  Here are some of the statistics that they came up with:

  • Over the last year 40 percent of Internet users have gotten a notice that their personal information, like username, password, credit card number or insurance number had been compromised.  [Source Qualtrics and Survey Sampling International]
  • 25 percent of of internet users have had at least one account hacked over the last year.
  • 20 percent of internet users have had their passwords stolen over the last year.
  • 12.7 million US consumers have been victim to fraud when there were attempted unauthorized uses of their credit or debit card or misuse of their personal information to open new unauthorized accounts or loans.  Total loss is $16 billion.  [Source Javelin Strategy & Research].
