Docker Containers: The Rise of Container Infrastructure
It’s hard to keep up with technology. But that’s not stopping businesses from trying. Only two years after the initial release of the open-source Docker project, already 70 percent of companies say that they’re either already using it or evaluating it — only 7 percent say that they’ve never heard of the technology. Early adopters like ECM software maker Nuxeo have been actively using Docker technology for more than one year.
Docker, the ‘Linux Container Engine’, is open-source Linux technology that can package all components needed by an application into a single container which can then be easily moved between cloud platforms, virtual machines, or physical bare-metal servers. Docker allows software to be deployable across a wide range of environments yet doesn’t require platform vendors to conform to specific cloud or VM requirements. Docker runs on all major Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, Suse and Arch.
Mark Davis, CEO of ClusterHQ, said that “Containers are exciting and probably the next big wave of how we build infrastructure applications, how we build the server side of mobile distributed applications. But it’s still a technology base that’s in its infancy.”
Bob Quillin, CEO and Co-founder of StackEngine , said that “it is clear that Docker has penetrated both the enterprise and the VMware user base, but concerns and challenges still remain: a lack of operational tools for production and security visibility.”
David Marshall, founder of VMblog, said that “with Docker, we’re seeing a different adoption model from recent technology initiatives such as the cloud, which was in large part top-down, pushed by executive CIO initiatives or financial management. Docker usage, on the other hand, is being driven from the middle out, either by middle management or grassroots efforts.”
