EFSS: Enterprise/Electronic File Synchronization and Sharing
Electronic File Synchronization and Sharing (EFSS) are software services that allow users to save electronic files in the cloud, like documents, photos and videos. EFSS is often used as a tools to easily share files with other employees, external customers, or partners.
Gartner defines EFSS as follows: “EFSS offerings enable modern user productivity and collaboration scenarios for the creation of a digital workplace. More specifically, EFSS refers to a range of on-premises or cloud-based capabilities that enable individuals to synchronize and share documents, photos, videos and files across multiple devices, such as smartphones, tablets and PCs. File sharing can be within the organization, as well as externally (e.g., with partners and customers) or on a mobile device as data sharing among apps. Security and collaboration support are critical capabilities of EFSS to address enterprise priorities.”
While consumer-oriented file sharing services like Box and Dropbox fall under the category of EFSS, the term is more widely used to describe services that are designed specifically for the security considerations of businesses and enterprises. Maybe, rather than Electronic File Synchronization and Sharing, a more apt description is Enterprise File Synchronization and Sharing. EFSS tries to overcome the drawbacks of consumer solutions that send data and content outside the company’s firewall. Unlike consumer products, EFSS provides greater control for businesses about how and where their content is stored and made available.
