Big Data: IEEE Forms a Big Data Initiative to Address Technology Challenges
Big data is receiving a lot of attention, but it isn’t a monolithic thing. Big data is comprised of a number of different facets and is also faced with a number of different challenges. For example, the IEEE group identifies the following challenges that big data initiatives need to deal with:
- Data classification and cleaning
- Collection of distributed data
- Accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data
- Efficient storage and transfer
- Privacy and security of data
- Fault tolerance
- Scalability and economic impact of implementation
- Intelligent analysis
- Insightful and flexible presentation
IEEE has created the Future Directions Big Data Initiative to address these challenges.
When asked which sectors will see the most benefit from Big Data technology, Dr. José M. F. Moura, co-founder of the IEEE Big Data Initiative, said that “It goes without saying that medical and health are areas where the availability of data has led to the development of new tools and technologies to analyze it all. Another area is the process industry, such as manufacturing and its instrumentation of factories and plants with lots of sensors. A lot of data is being processed to better manage industrial manufacturing processes. Another area is urban science, where big data can be used to make cities more liveable from an environmental, sustainability, and traffic or flows point of view. “
