Smart Dust: Miniature Non-Intrusive Sensors and Monitoring Devices
The continual miniaturization of electronics, devices and components is driving a new science-fiction-like technology called ‘smart dust’. Smart Dust is a system of miniature microelectromechanical devices that function as sensors or robots that can detect and report information about light, temperature, vibration, magnetism and environmental chemicals.
The idea is that millions, billions or even trillions of smart dust grains can be scattered to measure just about any characteristic of their environment. Smart dust is a technology that analysts like Gartner are beginning to seriously track.
A report by military technologies found that “Smart Dust is useful in monitoring and processing the real world phenomenon without disturbing the environment. Smart dust devices are proposed to be so light in weight and small in size that they can remain suspended in the environment like an ordinary dust particle. These properties of Smart Dust will render it useful in monitoring real world phenomenon without disturbing the original process to an observable extends.”
