Internet of Things (IoT): Traditional IT Architectures Will Evolve to Become More Decentralized
20 billion devices will be connected to the Internet by 2020 and ready to send and receive data, according to a forecast by Gartner. The amount of data generated by these devices will be unprecedented and dwarf the amount of data being processed today.
Many of the new devices that will be coming on line will be sensors that are deployed as part of Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Being able to manage large numbers of devices and the data they produce will require current data management architectures to be reenvisioned. Increasingly data processing that has traditionally been handled by a central system will be replaced by an architecture where data processing is pushed out closer to the devices being monitored.
Gary Barnett, chief software analyst at Ovum, said that “managing data by collecting it at the edge and centrally storing and processing it will be inappropriate to many IoT networks … Data management will be pushed out from the center into the network itself and onto the devices that sit at the edge.”
Devices in the field will need to be designed to be relatively self-sufficient and long-lasting. They will need to be self-tuning, self-healing with the ability to attempt to recover from failures. Many of the sensors and data collection devices are also expected to be small with only tiny amounts of on-board memory to enable them to be extremely energy efficient.
Barnett commented that “the dispersal of IoT data to the edge of the network means that the management of that data also needs to be dispersed. Coordinating the systems at the edge with a central source of intelligence will present constant ongoing challenges as the IoT evolves.”
