IT Automation: Enabling Faster Time to Market with Decreased Downtimes

By Dick Weisinger

Automating IT and cloud services is helping top-performing companies further improve their efficiency.

A study sponsored by Puppet found a strong correlation between high productivity and high adoption of IT automation tools.  The highest performing organizations, for example, automate nearly three quarters of their configuration management process, compared to lower performing businesses who spend considerably more time manually configuring their systems.

Another study sponsored by 2nd watch looked at how automation tools combined with cloud installations can significantly speed frequent updates and system improvements.  The report found that among those businesses using automation tools that 54 percent deploy new code changes at least weekly.  55 percent said that automation tools helps them to improve quality by being able to test more frequently and more thoroughly.

Jeff Aden, co-founder of  cloud automation company 2nd Watch, said that “automation, driven by cloud technologies, is critical to the rapid delivery of new workloads and applications.  Companies are automating everything from artifact creation to deployment pipelines and process, which includes metrics, documentation and data. The result is faster time to market for new applications, and less application downtime.”
