Knowledge Management: Keeping Tabs on Stimulus Dollar Spending
The massive amounts of money involved in the economic stimulus is causing a lot of worry of potential misuse or abuse of those funds. Members of the knowledge management community have banded together and approached the White House and Congress to consider the application of Knowledge Management to assist with good management of the funds.
The committee called the Federal Management Initiative Committee proposed that information should be considered an asset and that systems should be set up to better collect, aggregate and share data. They suggest that using a knowledge management system that they would better be able to select and maange programs to be funded by the $787 billion recovery act. The committee proposed that a central system be implemented so that individual government agencies that might be involved in implementing and overseeing the stimulus need not implement their own programs.
The committee proposed creating a federal knowledge management center that would act as a central clearinghouse for providing access to software, expertise and lessons learned. The committee recommended that the center be headed by a federal chief knowledge officer. The CKO would be in charge of the center’s operations and evangelize the benefits of information sharing and collaboration to the various agencies.
