Hu Yoshida, CTO for Hitachi Data Systems, identified five areas that IT Professionals are looking for in storage systems.  With reduced budgets this year, technology choices are being made after considerable thought about how to maximize capital expenditure investments.

The investment priorities are:

1.  Virtualized Storage Systems.  Many enterprises are currently only utilizing 20-30 percent of their total available storage capacities.
2.  Tiered Archive of Unstructured Data.  Companies will tier their data storage and move data based on policies to the most efficient storage tier.
3.  Data de-duplication.  Enterprises will save money to better utilize their existing storage by using techniques like compression and data de-duplication.
4.  Risk Mitigation.  Companies are concerned with security and how best to protect the data that they store.
5.  Power and Cooling.  Companies are looking for ways to save on power and cooling costs related to their storage hardware.  A “Clean and green” IT infrastructure can improve the bottom line with energy efficiency.
