New Hardware: Enabler of IoT Innovation
Analysts have been all over the Internet of Things (IoT), predicting how billions and billions of dollars will be spent connecting billions and billions of devices. But don’t confuse IoT with the many advances that we’re seeing with new hardware and new machines.
But in a recent piece for O’Reilly, Jon Brunner identifies the New Machine market as one that is distinct from the Internet of Things. Brunner says that the rapid rise in innovation in new machines, robots and devices is happening in parallel to IoT and is very distinct from it.
Brunner says that IoT is all about cheap hardware connected to the Internet, creating lots of data that can be crunched with cheap analytics and fed into machine learning.
On the other hand, Brunner says that the new tools that form the backbone of the New Hardware industry are being driven by advances in inexpensive hardware in the areas of 3D printing, new-generation CNC tooling, cheap microcontrollers, and new high-level programming languages to control embedded systems. He sees the New Hardware Movement as more of an enabler of IoT.
Brunner wrote that “the impact of the new hardware movement goes well beyond electronics and touches any industry that produces physical goods: it won’t be long before we see cars developed in an agile manner. On the other end of the spectrum, the new hardware movement is a primary enabler of the Maker movement; its accessible prototyping tools have become a popular hobbyist pastime.”
