Open Source: Google and Intel Identify OS Risks
Microsoft has been nearly alone in their warning of the potential problems and pitfalls with using Open Source. So it is a little surprising to hear that companies like Intel and Google chime in with at least some level of agreement.
Both Intel and Google say that Open Source has a lot of benefits, but they’re now warning about hidden pitfalls in Open Source licensing. Keeping track of the many OS licenses that exist and the legal language that describes each one can lead to a mind-boggling exercise required to determine the exact risk involved in using Open Source software.
Google and Intel now caution that many companies are following the Open Source trend but have not done the due diligence to understand the implications of Open Source licensing. Careless use of Open Source could “contaminate or infect” a company’s proprietary code base, and making a mistake could result in the loss of thousands of dollars. Companies need to dedicate resources to understanding and researching the terms of use of this type of software.
