Oracle: Targeting Enterprise 2.0
Oracle has been a laggard when it comes to on-Demand and Web 2.0, but that may be changing. In mid May Oracle announced they plan to open a 200,000 square foot $285 million dollar data center in West Jordan, Utah. Oracle On-Demand is tracking to bring in $700 million in 2008 and has about 3.6 million users of their on-demand apps.
Oracle’s approach to on-demand is different than the multi-tenanted approach of Salesforce.com. Their approach is to host separate instances of licensed Oracle applications. In that environment, customers can have a lot more flexibility in when upgrades occur and what kinds of customizations are possible.
Oracle is also now beginning to strongly evangelize Enterprise 2.0. Oracle President Charles Phillips says that many C-level executives at companies are apprehensive about Web 2.0 technologies, their security, and their robustness. Phillips thinks that education is the key — Web 2.0 has a lot to offer companies. “You can only do so many conference calls. With Enterprise 2.0, you can bring everyone into the same community and make them feel closer to the core.”
